Crafts Bursary – the big picture

the big picture

During my period at Duncan of Jordanstone I’ve been thinking about the ins and outs of my business and looking to improve it and make it more fluent – from the hand printed scarves, workshops I deliver to schools and community groups.  My website only tells a small story of what I’ve done and what I do so by the end of my awardee period at Duncan of Jordanstone I intend to re-vamp things to give the full picture.

Being awarded the ‘crafts bursary’ has really got me thinking about the big picture.  I’m very good at being busy all the time and not taking time to reflect, so this is a great opportunity for me and my practice.  Another great thing is that I have a mentor, Josie Steed that I can bounce ideas off and get advice every few weeks.  There’s such a great buzz at the art college and it’s an very inspiring place to work.  I’ve a space within the textile department , that i’ve surrounded myself with mind maps, images and fabric samples.

Went to a fantastic lecture by ‘Georgina Von Etzdorf’ who captivated the students and me with her delicious lecture on her textile brand.  Very inspiring!  Great use of colour and movement within the designs.  With a variety of high profile commissions and  lots of different products within the range.

I’m really lucky and received the Crafts Bursary at Duncan of Jordanstone  College of Art, funded by Creative Scotland.  There are 2 other awardees Fiona Thompson (ceramics) and Gilly Langton (Jewellery).  I’m doing professional development to update my practice.  Already I’ve been shown the laser cutter, learning illustrator, digital printing, gathering new source material and considering my business model.  Met my mentors who did a great evaluation of my career so far since degree show.  I want to make the most of the experience and so far it’s great!  It’s great being back at college!

Homer in Aberfeldy and Tayberry in Perth

I’ve just been dropping my scarves off to 2 fantastic galleries.

First stop was Tayberry in Perth which is  a lovely new gallery run by jewellery maker Ebba Redman.  A range of my hand printed wool scarves. A good place for finding something different for Christmas.

Next stop was Homer in Aberfeldy, it’s a lovely shop! Visiting the Watermill next door is a must for a cholled out coffee, browse amonst the books or seeing the exhibition in a fantastic building

Manchester Show

I thought the Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair was great – high standard of work and a good variety.  I was lucky to get a prize from one of the sponsors – Royal Exchange craft shop, who are going to have my work in an exhibition in 2010, I keep you posted when it will be.  The Royal Exchange building is amazing inside so it’ll be worth a look if you’re in the area.
